Algorithm
Example Algorithm for General Practitioners for the sleepPro Mandibular Advancement System
BACKGROUND:
Habitual snoring occurs in 60% of adult males and 40% of adult females. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is thought to be much less common, affecting 4% of men and 2% of women.
There are many causes of snoring and OSA, and it can be hard to determine the best course of treatment for these patients. The following is a treatment algorithm that will assist in the systematic evaluation and management of theses patients.
ALGORITHM:
Snoring patient
Is there a history of :
- Excessive daytime somnolence?
- Observed Apnoea?
- Waking up choking or gasping?
- Unrefreshing sleep?
- Epworth Sleepiness Score >12?
If YES, then refer to a sleep lab for overnight sleep study.
If NO, then:
General measures: weight loss, decrease alcohol, treat rhinitis, smoking …
Refer to Head & Neck surgeon if: nasal obstruction, large tonsils.
Try sleepPro standard if: no dentures and reasonable dentition.
If patient’s snoring resolves or improves, then either continue using , or use a custom-made splint such as a sleepPro custom, for extra comfort and increased patient compliance.
